酒匂川
酒匂川の徒歩渡りを描いています。小田原の名が有名になったのは明応4年（１４９５)、北上早雲が大森氏を滅ぼし、ここを本城としました。以後、諸国承認の来往も増え、相模国の中心として発展したのです。

Odawara
Odawara, which is nearly nine miles down the coast from Oiso, has been an important commercial and cultural center since a feudal lord named Höjö Sõun established his castle there in 1495. In the Edo period it was a flourishing castle town, and today it is a large and prosperous city.
The print shown here, which is one of the most famous in the Tokaido series, shows the view from the bank of the Sakawa River toward the castle and the mountain peaks of the Hakone Region. There are many inferior versions of this print in which the beauty and clarity of the colors are missing.
小さな人々が川を渡る図、酒匂川の渡し場です。小田原宿に入るには川を渡らなければなりませんでした。
水嵩の少ない１０月から２月のみ仮橋が架かりましたが、通常は徒行渡しといって、川越人足が旅人を輦台に乗せて担いだり、肩車をして渡していきました。
人足がお客様を乗せて川を渡すための台を輦台といいます。４人の人足が担ぐ、高欄のついていない輦台が平蓮台です。
駕籠を乗せた輦台は、１２人の人足に担がれています。これは中高欄輦台と呼ばれるタイプで、この上のランクになると１６人以上で担ぐ大高欄輦台がありました。
川を越すと草のおい茂る河原が広がり、
その向こうに小田原城と城下の街並みの屋根、そして箱根の山々がそびえます。

厳しい箱根の山越えが待っています。
