Shirasuka lay about four miles down the highway from Arai. In the early Edo period it was situated by the sea near a hill called Shiomizaka, which is shown in Hiroshige's print, but in 1697 it was moved farther inland so as to obtain protection from tidal waves. Hiroshige preferred the old location to the new, doubtless because of its natural beauty. He has conveyed this with great skill here, playing the gentle curves of the hill off against the serene expanse of blue ocean. A daimyo's retinue is climbing the hill, their yellow hats adding color and variety to the scene. The print is relatively faithful to nature, as are the somewhat similar versions in the gyösho and reisho editions.
