It was a distance of about two miles across the Oi River from Shimada to Kanaya. Hiroshige's print is labeled "The Opposite Side of the Oi River," but in fact it is largely imaginary. There are no mountains like those in the background in the vicinity of Shimada, and it is clear that they were simply put in to serve as a foil for the low mountain in the foreground. In scenes like this, where there are many people, Hiroshige often employed a wide variety of colors for their clothing and for the objects they carried. These are visible in the original edition, but they usually disappeared in later versions.
