Hiratsuka lies on a broad plain a little more than seven miles down the Tokaido from Fujisawa. This print, which is topographically very faithful, looks across the plain toward Mt. Koma, to the immediate right of which a part of snow-covered Mt. Fuji is · visible. The bare-chested man running toward the right is one of the Tokaido couriers, who, working in relays, covered the distance between Edo and Kyoto in as little as four days. The other two men are palanquin bearers returning with their empty palanquin from a trip.
